Why using the FAST Box One?
- Safe precious film and money!
An older methode of testing the cameras shutter was by simply wasting one or more roll of film.
Then going trough the shutter speeds, writing them down, developing the film and looking at the results…
The only issue with this kind of process is the time consumption and if not done correctly unkown amount of repeats.
Also, the verification of the results is mostly subjective and not expressed in numbers. - Use your old camera without expensive CLA!
Having an old beautiful camera from a family member or flea market laying around but the repair shop is not available or the cost to high?
When having checked the shutters condition with the FAST Box One and the result is consistent i.e. the speed should be 1/60th of a second
but the FAST Box One shows that the actual value is aprox. 1/40th, you simply can compensate it by changing the aperture value or ISO film speed.
This means, you can use your old camera and achieve perfect exposure by knowing what the shutter does – it is that simple.
Also, you can write the compensation value down or make a small sticker on your camera. - Portable and easy to use!
The FAST Box One is thanks to its compact size a companion for on the go.
Test a used camera on the flea market or check your gear after a long travel before inserting an expensive roll of film – sometimes it is better just to be sure.
Also, the FAST Box One´s solid case has no cables hanging out, you just need the light source from your smartphone – which is most of the time with you 😉
What started as a small project, out of pure curiosity, developed into a very popular product for every analog film lover.
We’re talking about FAST Box.
The FAST stands for “fast analog shutter tester” which enables every user to test their beloved analog film camera as quickly and easily as possible to be sure whether the shutter is working properly.
Personally, I received a lot of old, beautiful cameras as gifts from my grandfather and gradually disassambled, cleaned them and got them working. However, I discovered that some of the springs in the old mechanisms were no longer in tact and I had to find this out the hard way… namely after developing the film…
That’s when the idea came to prevent exactly this and to develop a small portable device that would allow me to test my camera’s functionality before inserting the film. This saved a lot of nerves and valuable film. In addition, the chance of having a smile on your face after developing the film is much higher 🙂
Even if the good old camera doesn’t keep the times but is consistent, you can compensate for this with the aperture or ISO of the film. The basic idea comes from a Github project which I then further developed into the FAST Box. https://github.com/hiroshootsfilm/shutterspeedtester
You can also watch my video on YouTube to see how the FAST Box works.
It’s easier than you think and the results speak for themselves.
The Fast Analog Shutter Tester is based on two standard AAA batteries.
The best light source is the flashlight on your smartphone – that’s it.
I wish everyone a lot of fun with the FAST Box and lots of well-exposed film shots!
